Vancouver, BC – June 27, 2017
The EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League is pleased to announce the 124 players from its U18 boys and girls divisions that have committed and are on their way to university soccer programs for the 2017 fall season. These commitments include schools in USPORTS, the NCAA, CCAA and the NAIA.
BCSPL General Manager Matt Holbrook noted the commitment of many of these players to the BCSPL’s growth over the last 6 years, “many of these outstanding student-athletes were on the initial U13 teams in the BCSPL’s first full season of play in 2012, so are the first graduating class to go all the way through from their U13 to U18 youth playing careers in the BCSPL. It’s no coincidence their talents that were developed in their clubs and by playing against each other in the province’s high performance league week in and week out has resulted in this amazing number of players moving onto university soccer opportunities”.
The Canada West division of USports was the overwhelming destination for 72 of these BCSPL graduates, with 16 heading to the University of the Fraser Valley alone, and 12 heading for both the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia.
The BCSPL has placed a large emphasis on the university pathway. In 2016, the league launched its own ‘College ID Weekend’ with U17/U18 teams playing doubleheaders in a neutral venue for university coaches to scout all BCSPL players with ease in one centralized location. With attendance by university coaches having almost doubled in 2017 for this ID weekend, there are possible plans to add U16 in the 2018 season and ensure all grade 10/11/12 players can be further identified through this venture.
Showing further support of the university pathway, in 2017 the BCSPL awarded another $4000 in scholarships to four graduating players. Since its inception in 2013, and including these 2017 awards, the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League Scholarship program has now awarded $32,000 to graduating BCSPL players. And thanks to the BCSPL’s development partner, Whitecaps FC, all U15 through U18 BCSPL teams participated in their annual College Showcase tournament in front of over 100 university coaches in attendance.
Congratulations to all players, and their clubs, for working hard to secure these exciting opportunities!
